Cara-Beth Burnside Interview (May 2003)

Who or what is the future of skateboarding?

The future of skateboarding is the younger girls coming up. It’s cool because they have a lot of girls to look up to, a lot of people are putting the girls in mags and on TV. The more girls see that, its going to be really inspiring and make them want to get out there and push themselves.

What does you downtime consist of?

My downtime??? I spend a lot of time at home. I like to just chill at my house in Encinitas, there is always something that needs to be fixed. I have 5 cats, they take up a lot of time. I like to surf, read a lot, stretch, hang out with my family and good friends...just keep it mellow so I have energy when I get on the road again.

What is the perfect day for you?

Perfect day is like, well I have had some pretty cool days just being on the road trip (The Girls Tour 2003). Just being with a bunch of good friends and we are all having fun. I liked when we hit 2 or 3 spots in a day and we all bust out. You do something new everyday because when you are at different parks you are pushed to not be in a rut being on the same course. Afterwards just all hang out, jacuzzi...ha! Go out and have a good time, go to dinner and just be with my friends.

What is the most surprising thing about you?

Most people are surprised when I tell them I have a college degree. And I went to the first Olympics for snowboarding and placed 4th.

If you weren’t a skateboarder/snowboarder what do you thing you would be doing?

I have a degree in human development, so I would probably be working with kids somehow. I like kids a lot and I think it is cool to hang out with them and inspire them, just push them to be good at something and follow their heart.

Where is your favorite place to hang out?

My favorite place is to be at home in Encinitas. Going to Swamies and getting some lunch, then going surfing and going home and hanging out with my cats...ha ha.

How much practice did it take to get where you are?

It took a lot of practice.  Lots and lots of practice.  I use to skate way more, it’s hard to skate that much but I would skate 6 or 7 hours a day.   Like vert, mini ramp or pools...I would try a trick, like on vert I would try a trick for like 2 hours straight for a week just until I nailed it.  Yeah, I put a lot of time in for sure.

What’s the difference in your mind set skating in a contest as opposed to just skating with your friends?

I just think it is pretty cool in our jam (format contest) because I just feel like everyone is skating so good, everyone is staying on and everyone has this fire in their eyes and you can see it.  We’re all stoked for each other and we get pumped on it.  It’s all good vibes, we all good friends.  We’re just there to have fun.

What’s the coolest story you have about one of your sponsors?

It’s pretty cool that Van’s wanted to do a signature shoe with me and they started of just kinda doing a prototype to see how people reacted to it and it went good.  I think that helped girls in skateboarding too, like just the direction of it...help it grow.  That’s been really great, they have been really supportive.

What about a good night sleep?

HA!  Ooh!  Yeah, yeah O.K., besides my adrenaline I need everyday and I will snap if I don’t get to skate after a couple days...I need lots of sleep.  Nobody jumping in my room and waking me up.  Don’t wake me up in the morning.  I do not like noise, that really bugs.  Just let me sleep and it’s good.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

Hmmm...Vanessa and Amy?  Ha!  Vanessa, I’m going to throw you out of the bus.  Pet peeve....hmmm...I think I have too many to list them.  I don’t know, I don’t like when people litter.  I have a real pet peeve about that.  I think people should pick up after themselves and throw their stuff in the garbage can.  Hear that Amy...Vanessa.
